Imagine this: You’ve booked a few nights at one of Bangkok’s luxury hotels, complete with a sleek and modern rooftop pool, only to see clips of water cascading over the edge of buildings from 40 floors up!

Listen, your concern is 100% valid. The footage that circulated on the news and social media is nothing short of terrifying!

Thailand is a dream destination for many. The thought of it being unsafe is enough to make even the most seasoned traveler second-guess their plans.

But before you make any panic-driven assumptions, let’s break it all down. What really happened? What do the facts say? And, most importantly—is Thailand still safe? Let’s dive in.

Earthquake Shakes Thailand: Should You Be Freaking Out?

On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, sending shockwaves across Thailand, with tremors even reaching as far as Bangkok!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Why did it hit Bangkok so hard?

Well, while the epicenter was a massive 450–500 kilometers away from Bangkok (About 300 miles), earthquakes of this magnitude can send shockwaves that can still shake buildings and cause noticeable tremors.

And Bangkok, being a sprawling, densely populated metropolis with towering skyscrapers, really amplified the effects of the quake.

The footage you’ve seen on social media and the news? It’s not exaggerated. The tremors hit some areas of the city hard, creating the dramatic scenes flooded our screens.

Experiencing the Bangkok Earthquake: A Moment I Won’t Forget!

First and foremost, I am safe!

I was on the BTS Skytrain heading home when it happened. The train started to shake more than usual, but I honestly didn’t think much of it at first.

It wasn’t until I got off the train and returned home that I realised something more serious had occurred. With my condominium building evacuated and alarms ringing off in the distance, I overheard another resident on the phone mention an earthquake—I couldn’t believe it!

What Influencers REALLY Did During the Quake—You Won’t Believe It!

Being unable to get back to my room, I unlocked my phone and opened social media. That’s when I started to see some of the worst footage of the earthquake.

Influencers like Bearded TravelsTravis Leon, and Paul Lee uploaded panic-stricken videos of themselves evacuating buildings, with some floors as high as 40 stories shaking and swaying from side to side.

But honestly, the area I was in seemed to return to relative normality within just 2-3 hours. I watched as 7-Elevens reopened for business, Thai ladies started to serve up Pad Kra Pao at roadside vendors, and even massage parlours filled with customers, all getting a much-needed foot rub after the chaos.

Is Thailand REALLY Safe After a 7.7 Quake? The Truth Might Shock You!

I’m no expert, but in my opinion, yes.

Thailand is one of the safest places I’ve ever visited.

The risk of Thailand experiencing a damaging earthquake is low, with only about a 10% chance of an earthquake shaking in any given area in Thailand over the next 50 years.

Can anything happen at any time? Potentially. Everything comes with risk.

But when you come to Thailand, try not to worry about what might not happen. Instead, focus on what could definitely happen.

Like going to Phuket to enjoy a fresh coconut on the beach for under $5, or seeing elephants surrounded by stunning jungle views in the mountains of Chiang Mai—these are the experiences that will make your trip worth it.
